Maria was born in Poland when it was under Russian rule. The Russian soldiers there made sure that no one spoke Polish, or did certain things. Maria loved school and, for a while, had to attend a school that was moving from place to place, so the Russians would not find out about it. It was nicknamed the "Flying School." Maria's mother died, and she went to live with some relatives in Paris after she graduated from high school. In French, her name means Marie, so it was changed. She married, had two daughters, discovered two new elements, and won the Nobel Peace Prize twice. This was not my favorite book, but it was very informative.
