Frederick Bailey was born a slave. He never knew his father and never knew his siblings for many years. He was taught how to read by his slave master's wife. Frederick taught himself how to write, and secretly taught other slaves how to read and write as well. He and some other slaves tried once to escape, but failed. He eventually escaped on his own and married his first wife. Not only that, but he also changed his last name from Bailey to Douglass so that his old slave master would not find him. He became a leader in the rights for colored people and was very successful. Frederick married again when his first wife died. This was not my favorite book, but it was very informative.
