That Was Then, This Is Now is a companion novel to The Outsiders. The main characters are 16-year-olds Bryon Douglass, who is also the narrator, and Mark Jennings. Bryon and Mark have been best friends and brothers for forever. They were best friends first, then became brothers when Mark's parents shot each other during an argument and Bryon's mother took Mark in. In this book, Bryon and Mark were getting into all kinds of shenanigans and hanging out together all the time until Bryon gets a girlfriend, Kathy Carlson. Then, things went down hill when Kathy's little brother M&M turns up missing. This book has mystery, close friendships, romance, death, and someone gets arrested. This book was pretty good; not as good as The Outsiders, but still pretty good. 4/5 stars
