This book is about a 12-year-old girl named Amal who lives in rural Pakistan with her family. She has many dreams and goals she wishes to achieve, including attending college and becoming a teacher. Then, in an instant, it looks like her dreams for her future are truly over. When her father couldn't pay the money he owes back to the son of a powerful local landlord, Amal is sent to work as a servant in his home until the debt can be repaid. In my opinion, it is truly an awesome book that puts a relatable face on the practice of indentured servitude, the often downgraded place girls have in many cultures, and the power of education to change their lives.
