I’ve always been a fan of Peg Kehret’s action packed kids’ books. In fact, Deadly Stranger was my favorite in elementary school! It was a pleasure to listen to her true story of getting polio when she was only 12 years old. She had two kinds of polio and was in imminent danger of death or permanent paralysis. I couldn’t help but make comparisons in my mind to children going through the Covid-19 outbreak that they will be isolated and quarantined away from their parents for extended lengths of time. Peg didn’t know anyone with polio and didn’t know how she caught it, but found out later that people can be carriers and not know it. I enjoyed hearing Peg’s recollection of going through this horrible disease at such a young age and I’m impressed with how great a writer she is despite missing a year of school.
