I was not expecting this story. It takes place ten years after the Legend series ended, and it had been so long since I read that trilogy that I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get into this one. I was wrong. Marie Lu pulls you in immediately with alternating chapters in Daniel’s voice and in his brother Eden’s voice. I connected to Daniel right away, remembering all the incredible moments from the earlier books. But Eden was different. He was just a young kid in the original series and now he’s about to graduate high school! Still, his story hooked me too. The brothers are living in the fairly new country of Antarctica, far from the Republic from the original books, which means far from June too. The Antarctica people live under a level system that rise if you do good things and lower if you don’t. Eden is sickened by this system, watching many good people unable to rise to higher levels and he wants to change it. Thus, he is sucked in by a supervillain who convinces him that’s what he wants too. He just leaves out the part of wanting to be in control of the levels himself. High action ensues and June and Daniel are reunited to fight the villain. If you loved the original series, this book does not disappoint!
