Seventh grader Efren Nava's world is turned upside down when his undocumented mother is taken by ICE and deported to Mexico. Now Efren has to take care of his younger twin siblings while his father starts working an extra job to try and raise money to get Efren's mom back to the US. Dealing with all the uncertainty of his mom being gone and trying to navigate 7th grade at the same time is not easy on Efren, and his friendship and schoolwork suffers because of it. I like the way the author dealt with this subject and didn't give it a fairy tale ending.
