Review: "Bird," by Angela Johnson

Bird has run away from home because her stepfather has run away too. He disappeared and Bird is determined to bring him back. She hides out in the field of a farmhouse and sneaks into the farmhouse when she's hungry or needs to take a bath. The boy who lives there, Ethan, sees her but doesn't tell her secret. Ethan just got a new heart so he doesn't have many friends due to spending most of his life in hospitals. Bird also meets Jay, a boy who's getting over the death of his brother. Heavy topics, but handled delicately.
