Allies

In typical Gratz style, this novel interweaves several storylines with characters from all over the world coming together as Allies to push the Germans out of France and back to Berlin. American soldier Dee is hiding the fact that he’s actually from Germany originally. Algerian girl Samira is working with her mother in the French Resistance. English tank driver Bill is anxious to get to Bayeaux to see the tapestry that depicts William the Conqueror’s invasion of Normandy. Black medic Henry is tending the wounded on the beaches of Normandy despite the racism he faces. All of these stories are a bit hard to keep track of if you’re a reluctant reader, but the action and violence of D-Day may help readers power through.

Mrs. Denney's Rating: ***1/2
