After several of my friends said this was the best book they'd ever read, I put myself on the wait list for it at the public library. Months later, it finally became available! I'm so glad I read this. The story tells the tale of two sisters with very different personalities coming into their own during World War 2 in France. They each have to show their own resilience and courage when faced with the horrors of war. Teenager Isabelle is impulsive and wants to do her part to help the Resistance. Her older sister Vianne is more reserved and will do anything to keep her daughter safe when a Nazi billets in her home. Both are courageous in their own ways and the story keeps you guessing until the end about which sister is reminiscing about their time as a "Nightingale," which was the resistance nickname they went by.
Mrs. Denney's Rating: ***1/2
