Adolphus Tips

I checked this audiobook out for my 10-year-old and I to listen to in the car. She had recently read Saving Zasha and really enjoyed that story. Seeing that this one was in the same time period and appeared to be centered around a cat instead of a dog, I thought she'd enjoy this one too. But, even after only the first few chapters, I realized this book was much darker than expected. Kittens being drowned, a father off at war, a family forced to leave their town so soldiers could use it as a training site, and a cat that seems to have nine lives, but really isn't in the majority of the story. It's not that this was a horrible book, but it was definitely not what we anticipated, so that threw my judgement off. I wouldn't recommend it for upper elementary readers as the cover suggests.
