War That Saved My Life

This 2018 Sequoyah Intermediate winner was on my radar but I didn't realize how much I'd actually enjoy it until I gave it a try!

Ada is a ten year old with a clubfoot living in World War 2 era London. Her wretched mother tells everyone in the village that Ada is simple and won't even let Ada leave the apartment. But, everything changes when her younger brother Jamie tells her that all the kids at the school are being sent to live in the country because they're afraid Hitler will bomb London. Ada teaches herself to walk in secret and sneaks out with Jamie to leave her mother behind forever. Assigned to live with a single lady in Kent, England, Jamie and Ada are shocked by how little they know about life. Never had pillows or sheets, never washed with hot water, never used a toilet, the list goes on and on. Ada is enthralled by a pony that lives on their land and she is intent on teaching herself to ride that pony despite her club foot. Loved this story and the audiobook version was fabulous!
