Patina can run and run very well. Even though she's new to the track team, she runs faster than the other girls. But her home life isn't as wonderful as her running skills. Her dad died suddenly when she was young, and then her mom lost both her legs to diabetes. Patina's aunt Emily and uncle Tony are raising Patina and her sister, Maddy, since their mom can't do much for them. The readers get to know Patina's strong temper, but also how nurturing she is with Maddy and her mom. Luckily, we also find out how Ghost's race turns out from the end of his book, since Mr. Reynolds left us hanging in Ghost!
