This book is so good. I loved the main character, Willowdean AKA "Will" AKA "Dumplin'." She is a self-proclaimed fat girl growing up in her beauty queen mother's shadow, haunted by the beauty pageant that defines the town. But this year, Will wants to do something about it. Why shouldn't she enter the pageant and rock the boat on what the world says is "worthy" of a beauty queen? She and her offbeat group of friends do just that. By entering the pageant, they're telling everyone that they're not ashamed of who they are and that everyone is deserving of a chance to shine. Add to it that Will gets to have an adorable first romance with the hot guy she works with? Sign me up. It's a coincidence that I read this one right after "Moxie" by Jennifer Mathieu, but they have some similarities. They both take place in small Texas towns where football rules and girls are meant to be cheerleader or beauty queens. They both have first romances with girls who don't think they're worthy of the guys who like them. They both have main characters who go through wonderful growth as they learn to accept who they are and not worry what others think. Loved this one, so I started its companion novel "Puddin'" as soon as I finished it!
