Piecing Me Together

Jade is one of very few African American students at her private school. She attends on scholarship and doesn't have any close friends at school, despite being there for two years. A new student, Sam, catches Jade's eye because they both ride the city bus to school and share a Spanish class. But Sam is white and Jade is black, so they both have a lot to learn to have a healthy friendship. Meanwhile, Jade is accepted into an exclusive mentor program called Woman to Woman, and although she isn't happy about being mentored because she is pitied or needs to be "fixed," she does work with her mentor, Maxine, to try to better herself. Jade wants to be seen as someone who doesn't need help but can help others, and she focuses a lot of time on her collage art. This is an eye-opener for kids wanting to be comfortable in their own skin and confident in themselves.
