The book ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding, entertains us with a story about a group of young boys who get stranded on an island with no adult supervision. When the kids first get there, they figure they need to find a way to let each other speak when they need to, so they find a conch shell and state whoever wields it must be heard. Then they select a chief of the island, Jack Merridew, who declares that their greatest need is meat. While some boys believe they need meat, some think they need to build a large shelter or a large fire to attract the attention of passing ships. Then when a large fire is started, Jack and his hunters put the fire out to redirect everyone’s attention to a large pig they caught. When this happens, Ralph, a boy on the island, states if all they want is meat, they should go to their own part of the island and those who want fire can stay. When the boys divide into two groups, they begin to declare war on each other resulting in one person going crazy and thinking that a pile of pig’s guts was the lord of the flies, two people dying, one disappearance, and the conch shell being broken, until the boys are rescued by the British Navy. All in all, I really liked this book because the main characters are children rather than adults and it gives a realistic description of what would happen if children were stranded on an island alone.
